Katori Jingū Shrine’s Danki Festival
Also known as the Hachikoku Hachimasu (approx. 1285 kg of rice) Rice Dumpling (dango) Festival, this festival dedicates rice dumplings made from freshly harvested rice to show appreciation for the year’s bountiful harvest. It is also said to be a festival to express gratitude for the female deities’ services at the Large Banquet Festival, another bountiful harvest appreciation ritual which takes place on November 30th. This Shinto ritual is unusual in that there is no sake offering. After the festival, rice dumplings are distributed to the visitors. It is said that eating this rice dumpling will prevent you from catching a cold.
