National Treasures: Inventory of Historic Materials

The historical materials related to Inoh Tadataka in the Museum include the 2,345 items selected from among his Important Cultural Properties and have been designated as National Treasures since June 29, 2010.
These are categorized into maps/drawings, documents/records, missives, books and survey instruments. These also include the materials related to Tadanori, his grandson as well as the items related to Tadataka's nationwide surveys.
* National Treasures are defined as historical materials of particular high value from the viewpoint of world culture or outstanding treasures for the Japanese people among the Important Cultural Properties designated by the government.
Maps and Drawings: 787 items
The Map of Hakodate and Its Environs
The historical materials in this category include the colored Inoh Maps and their base drawings, such as sketches and simple bird's-eye view maps with landscapes of the surveyed routs and areas. It also includes the reference drawings which Inoh Tadataka collected from the feudal domains he visited.
These materials show the process involved in the creation of the Inoh Maps and the type of surveying techniques followed for each local area.

Documents and Records: 569 items
The Record of the First Survey of Hokkaido in 1800 (whole)
The historical materials in this category include the diary Inoh Tadataka wrote during his nationwide surveys, namely: Santou-Houi-Ki, the record of the bearing angles of mountains and other points; the records of his astronomical observation; the official diary of his mentor, Takahashi Yoshitoki; and the star maps drawn by his grandson, Tadanori.

Missives: 398 items
A Duplicate of His Missive
This exhibits the handwritten missives of Inoh Tadataka. In addition, it showcases those of his family, including the missives of Kagetaka, his son, and Ine, his daughter. This exhibit also contains missives of Takahashi Yoshitoki and Kageyasu, his mentors; Ogata Kenjiro and Sakabe Sadahei, his disciples; Egawa Hidetake and Kuboki Seien, his friends; and similar items from other officials.

The Instruction of Surveying - The Latter Part Vol. III
The historical materials in this category include the almanac and books on surveying, Japanese mathematics, and geography which Inoh Tadataka used and collected throughout his career in survey work.

Instruments: 63 items
Odometer
This category exhibits the instruments Inoh Tadataka used., and iIt contains Tthe odometer, the semicircular pelorus, and the small and medium quadrants (small) for the land surveys, and the quadrant (medium), and the Suiyou-Kyugi, the pendulum chronograph to for measuring thee longitude for in the astronomical observations.
In addition, this exhibit contains the ruling pen and the stamp of map symbols that Inoh Tadataka used for mapping. The Suiyou-Kyugi in this collection was used by his grandson, Tadanori. Due to the extreme rarity of these historical items, this collection is acclaimed as one of the greatest in its field.
