Tsunomiya Torii Riverbank

更新日:2021年6月18日

At Tsunomiya Torii Riverbank, the Tsunomiya Torii Gate stands, facing the Tone River. This gate was once the First Torii Gate of Katori Jingū Shrine and the beginning of the former front approach to the shrine. When the water transportation business was booming, many writers and artists, such as Watanabe Kazan and Akamatsu Sōtan, would visit Tsunomiya. On the riverbank, there is a lamp that once burned throughout the night, serving as a lighthouse, and a stele inscribed with a poem written by Yosano Akiko.

In addition, the embankment along the Tsunomiya Torii Riverbank has become the Ōtone Cycling Road. Enjoy the majestic Tone River and its river breeze as you cycle along the 21.7 km road, which stretches from Suigo-ōhashi Bridge to the dam at the mouth of the Tone River.
