Kanpuku-ji,a Buddhist tempte belonging to Shingon sect, is believed to have been founded in the 9th century. Many Buddhist statues are posessed by this temple. Some of them, such as juichimen kannon, with eleven faces, are designated as National Important Cultural Properties. Found in the graveyard are gravestones of outstanding persons in the history of Sawara, such as Ino Tadataka and Katori Nahiko (1723-82),a kokugaku (Nationat Learing) scholar.
